Lots of people start vlogging casually to record everyday moments or trips. But once your phone is full of clips, you might have wondered, "Why doesn't my footage look as aesthetic as everyone else's?" Or you may have transferred your videos to a PC only to find they won't open.

This guide is for vlogging beginners. It walks through iPhone camera settings for vlogging, how to fix video playback errors on Windows, and how to edit with AI using HeimLog, in that order.

## Set these up before you shoot with your iPhone

You don't need a separate camera. An iPhone alone is enough to make a good-looking vlog. Check the settings below before you start filming.

### Resolution and frame rate

In the iPhone Camera app's Video mode, tap the resolution and FPS values shown on screen to change them. You can also change the defaults under Settings → Camera → Record Video.

Higher resolution and frame rates mean bigger files, so you don't need to shoot everything in 4K at 60fps. If this is your first iPhone vlog, start with these settings based on what you're filming:

- Conversations, cafés, cooking, quiet everyday scenes: 1080p HD at 30fps
- Lots of walking or movement: 1080p HD at 60fps

Neither setting is always better. Shoot everyday scenes at 30fps to keep files light, and use 60fps for moments where you want smoother motion.

### Lock focus and exposure

While filming, tap the screen to set focus at that spot. Drag the sun icon next to the focus box up or down to adjust brightness. If it bothers you that focus and brightness keep shifting mid-shot, press and hold the screen to lock autoexposure and autofocus (AE/AF Lock).

### Keep colors consistent: Lock White Balance

If your footage keeps shifting yellow or blue as you move between locations, turn on Settings → Camera → Record Video → Lock White Balance. It helps reduce color shifts near a café window, in outdoor shade, or indoors where lights of different colors are mixed.

### Capture moments fast with QuickTake

In Photo mode, press and hold the shutter button to start recording right away, without switching to Video mode. Slide the shutter button to the right to lock it, and recording continues hands-free. It's handy when you suddenly want to capture a moment during your day. One YouTuber even says this feature helps keep your video quality from dropping.

### 💡 Habits worth building for iPhone vlogging

- Wipe your camera lens clean before you shoot
- When walking, hold the phone with both hands, elbows tucked against your body, and move slowly
- Leave 1–2 seconds of buffer right after you press record and before you stop
- Shoot lots of short 5–10 second clips from varied angles instead of one long take

## When iPhone videos won't play on a Windows PC

Did you move your footage to your PC, only to get a black screen or an "unsupported codec" error?

This happens because iPhones save video in HEVC (H.265), a high-efficiency codec that shrinks file sizes. The default Windows media player may not support it. Here's how to fix it.

### Check that the file transferred properly

First, confirm the same video plays normally on your iPhone. If the file on your PC is 0KB or unusually small, the transfer may have been interrupted, so try copying it again.

### Try a different media player

If the default player can't open it, try a player that supports HEVC, such as VLC media player. If it opens fine there, the problem is most likely your existing program's codec support, not the original file.

### Add the HEVC codec or convert to H.264

If you still can't edit the video in other players, install the "HEVC Video Extensions" app from the Microsoft Store, and the default Windows player should open it fine.

Or you can convert the video to H.264\. Quality can vary depending on your conversion settings, so keep your iPhone originals and work on copies.

### Use "Most Compatible" for future shoots

If you want to prioritize compatibility with Windows, go to Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. New videos will be saved in H.264, which works far better with Windows.

## Edit your iPhone footage in 30 minutes with HeimLog

Once your videos are on your PC, it's time to edit. With traditional editing, you review clips one by one and pick the scenes you want by hand.

If cutting dozens of raw clips and adding captions sounds exhausting, try HeimLog, an AI vlog editing tool. Just upload your footage, and it builds a vlog in the editing style you choose.

### HeimLog's editing modes

- Chronological auto-edit: The AI picks highlight scenes as your day unfolds, in time order.
- Theme-based edit: Choose a theme, such as shopping, food, or sightseeing, and the edit centers on related scenes.

If you don't like the first draft, you can select "Create New Project" at no extra cost and rebuild it in a different style. That means you can try several different vibes from a single set of footage.

Tweak the captions on the AI's draft, check the AI auto-blur that hides other people's faces, then export, and your first vlog is done.
