Editing GoPro footage doesn't stall because editing is hard. **It stalls at the step before editing starts.** This article is about shortening that step. --- ### Why editing GoPro footage keeps getting postponed **The filenames tell you nothing.** `GX010147`, `GX010148`, `GX010149`. Which one was the café, and which was the alley at sunset? No way to know from the name. **The thumbnails don't help either.** Action cams shoot wide, so the first frame is usually sky or pavement. Forty files in a row, all indistinguishable. **One moment is split across several files.** GoPro chapters long recordings into separate files, so the good bit often lands right on a file boundary. **Preview stutters.** If you shot 4K or HEVC, just scrubbing the timeline is a fight before you've made a single cut. And one more thing. A month after the trip, the wanting-to-make-it feeling is gone. Not because editing is hard, but because the hill in front of it is high enough that you keep putting it off. --- ### When you want a travel vlog, not a highlight reel Worth separating out. The 30-second thing your camera app generates automatically, cuts snapping to the beat. It's well made and it's fine for Instagram. But it probably hasn't once landed as *the* video from that trip. What you want after a trip is usually closer to this: - What you ate that morning and where you walked, in order - The parts where you're talking to the camera - Eight minutes, twelve minutes — something you'd actually upload - Something that brings the trip back when you play it in three years A beat-synced reel is **for showing other people.** A chronological vlog is **for keeping the day.** They're different objects, and right now only the first one is well served. --- ### Where the editing time actually goes A lot of the pipeline has gotten faster over the past few years. The problem is getting there, and with six hours of raw footage that part takes longer. --- ### Four ways to shorten clip selection #### 1\. Tag while you're shooting The most reliable option. GoPro lets you add a HiLight tag mid-recording with a button press or voice control, up to 80 tags in a single recording. The voice command is "GoPro HiLight"; "That was sick" does the same thing. Supported from HERO5 onward. The premise is demanding, though. You have to be able to judge "I'll probably use this" while it's happening — and the situations you use an action cam in are usually ones where your hands aren't free, or you have no attention to spare, or both. **Works when** — skiing, surfing, diving, anything with a clear decisive moment **Doesn't when** — walking around all day on a trip, where it isn't obvious what deserves a tag #### 2\. Transcode to proxies, then scrub at speed Convert to low-res proxies and scrub at 4–8×. Premiere's proxy workflow and DaVinci's optimized media both do this, and it fixes the stuttering preview at the same time. Six hours at 8× is forty-five minutes. But at speed you miss expressions, speech, anything that passes quickly — so you end up dropping back to normal speed anyway. **Works when** — landscape and movement footage with little dialogue **Doesn't when** — you talk to camera a lot, which is most vlogs #### 3\. Split the files with scene detection Premiere's Scene Edit Detection, DaVinci's Scene Cut Detection and PySceneDetect all split long files at visual transitions. Less useful than it sounds. These tools exist to **recover the original cut points from a video that has already been edited and flattened.** Footage that runs twenty uninterrupted minutes per file has almost no transitions to find. Resolve only offers it at import, so you can't even run it on a clip already in your timeline. **Works when** — re-splitting a finished video **Doesn't when** — selecting from raw footage #### 4\. Content-based selection Looking at what happens inside a scene rather than at when the picture changes. Filtering near-duplicate shots, isolating speech, classifying scene types. This is the only approach that touches selection itself, and it already exists in several forms. What differs is what comes out. --- ### What GoPro Quik and Insta360 auto-editing can and can't do If you shoot on an action cam, your camera's own app is already doing automatic selection. **GoPro Quik** — while the camera charges, footage auto-uploads to the cloud and a highlight video is generated and sent to you. The app finds the best shots, syncs them to the music, and adds transitions. There's a macOS desktop version too. **Insta360 AI Highlights Assistant** — the camera flags standout moments during recording, and when you connect your phone, a ready-edited reel is waiting under Memories. Insta360 states that this processing runs locally on the camera or phone and that raw footage and face data are never uploaded. Supported on X5, X4 and the Ace series, with some shooting modes excluded. Both are well built. Feed them a completed long video and they cut shorts from it. No finished video, no use. **Tools where you do the editing** — Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut.
